SATSA Advisory: Monitoring Safety and Travel Conditions Following Unrest in Mozambique

SATSA News

Please refer to the latest update (30 October 2024) here.

SATSA is monitoring the situation in Mozambique after violent protests broke out in the wake of the country’s election results. Protest action has been seen in isolated cases across the country amid allegations of vote rigging, and the situation remains volatile.

On Thursday night into Friday morning, a group of tourists were stranded on the Mozambique side of the Lebombo/Ressano Garcia Border Post between South Africa and Mozambique. There have been no reports of injury, and all tourists have managed to make their way safely into South Africa this morning with the assistance of the Mozambique police. Reports indicate that the Lebombo Border Post is still affected with sporadic closures due to heightened tensions in the area.

The knock-on effects may impact tourists coming into South Africa from Mozambique, as well as international travellers hoping to travel into Mozambique from South Africa in the coming days. Please advise your guests and clients to avoid the Lebombo Border Post today and practice vigilance if they are travelling in the next couple of days. The main priority remains the safety of everyone in the area, including tourists and business travellers.

SATSA is keeping an eye on the situation and will be updating our members and the broader tourism community as and when relevant information becomes available.

We encourage you to review this FAQ and to advise travellers to avoid the Lebombo Border Post and exercise caution when travelling in the region over the coming days.
